National chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Oyegun, for the first time, yesterday accepted that some of the steps taken by APC immediately it came into power in 2015 were responsible for the numerous crisis the nation is going through now. Top on the list of the various crisis confronting Nigeria since the enthronement of APC government is the current economic recession even as economists allege that the country has slipped into depression with inflation rate hovering around the 18 per cent mark.
It would be recalled that Nigerians many of who voted the APC in the March 2015 presidential election which saw the defeat of the then ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have consequent upon the near prostrate nature of the nation’s economy continue to lament the choice they made. The APC government is been accused of not keeping faith with its campaign promises.
But Oyegun, who led some other APC National Working Committee (NWC) members to receive President of the Senate Bukola Saraki to the APC’s national secretariat for the first time since Saraki’s emergence against his party’s wish confessed that the problems created by the party at inception have “affected the mode of operations and the level of interactions between the various arms of government and the party.”
Saraki who came into APC’s national secretariat around 2:10pm was accompanied by Senate Whip Olusola Adeyeye, Senate leader Ali Ndume and Deputy Senate leader Bala Ibn-Na’allah.
While welcoming his guests to the party secretariat before they entered into closed door meeting, Chief Oyegun conceded to the fact that “economy is tough as a result, people are going through hard times and it is certainly not acceptable.

“Unfortunately, it is clear that there were first steps since we came into office which created problems and the very nature itself of the amalgamating parties, created its own issues all of which has tended, up till now, affected the mode of operations and the level of interactions between the various arms of government and the party.
“So we have a unique, God-given opportunity to take a look at ourselves, take a look at the National Assembly, look at the party and look at the way we all interact between ourselves and the governed and it is my hope that this will be the very best of this high level interaction.

I want to welcome you most warmly to this first interaction between the NWC of the party and the leadership of the senate.  As they say, it is better late than never but as at today, the party is at a critical juncture in its existence and we have the opportunity to take a strong look at the party, an opportunity to take a strong look at our control of the Senate, the opportunity to draw up a new basis of cooperation between the party, its members in the Senate and of course the executive because we all belong to one party,” Oyegun stated.
He also said that “the people who are looking up to us, wants to find us concentrated, determined, focused on programmes that will ameliorate not just the economy but the conditions of living for the ordinary Nigerian. It is hoped that after this interaction, the public will begin to see a new party, National Assembly and of course focused governance of the people.”
Speaking with newsmen after the closed door meeting that lasted for about two hours, Senate President Saraki, who was not looking cheerful said “We both poured our minds, we told ourselves the hard truth and at the end of the day, we accepted that certain things were not done but we accepted to move forward and work with the party in the interest of building the party because of Nigerians that believe in our party, we need to work closely together and we are hopeful that the new chapter is being opened today.”
Also speaking, Chief Oyegun said that both Parties agreed at the meeting to work together “to address some of the glitches that still exist, the relationship between the National Assembly and the executive. We want to assure the general public that they will see results that will lift their spirit in the next few weeks and months to follow.
“It means that an end is in sight. We have started the process, but there are issues to be resolved and there is no question at all that we are a family and when things have gone wrong, we accept that things have gone wrong and we are determined to right those wrongs”.
