Despite the different campaigns against corruption, by the President Muhammadu Buhari government, the Presidency has lamented that Nigerians still celebrate corrupt politicians, who are supposed to be behind bars.
Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, made this disclosure on Tuesday, January 10, during a meeting with a delegation of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC, led by its Chairman, Professor Itse Sagay, at the Presidential Villa; the outcome of which was made available to Newsmen, by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande.
The Vice President’s position, is coming on the heels of the allegation against former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, by the National Assembly, that the ex-President, institutionalized corruption during his reign (1999-2007).
Recall, that the Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Abdulrazaq Namdas, recently took a swipe at the former President, describing him as the grandfather of corruption in Nigeria.
He had said: “Lest we forget, the person who introduced corruption to the National Assembly, is Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. He birthed the 4th Republic National Assembly with corrupt practices from day one; indeed the first day of the Republic.

“He bribed PDP, ANPP, and AD Legislators, on their inauguration in 1999, to vote against the majority candidate of PDP, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo. That was how Senator Evan Enwerem, became Senate President.
“Have we forgotten the sacks of money displayed on the floor of the House of Representatives, being bribed money paid by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to some Honourable Members, to impeach Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ghali N’abba.”
Speaking, Osibanjo said: “How we communicate what is going on regarding corruption, is important. There are still those who think a politician who steals, is some kind of Robin Hood, instead of being vilified. Some people believe that if ‘my kinsman’ steals, it is ok.”
Osinbajo therefore, stressed that it was important to completely delegitimize corruption, through the way it is communicated to the public.
The Vice President, while noting that it is important that corruption trials once commenced, should be concluded promptly, appreciated efforts so far made by PACAC, in the on-going anti-corruption war in the country.
“I commend the excellent work you have done so far from the beginning,” he said, adding that, the Committee has done very well in removing scepticism, as to whether an anti-corruption initiative can work well in the country.
Sagay, in his comment at the meeting, said PACAC has engaged with all anti-corruption agencies in the country, including the Police, and the Judiciary.
“We are cooperating effectively well with them,” he said.
